The 2012 Mayan Calendar and it's Significance in the Mayan Prophecies

By Sandra Musser

The 2012 Mayan Calendar in particular the Long Count has caused plenty of controversy over its end date of December 21, 2012. Most of the popular doomsday prophecies hinge on this date. But is this end date really an ending? According to the Maya, time evolves in every recurring and overlapping cycles. So this ending merely marks the beginning of the next Great Cycle. According to the 2012 Mayan calendars, December 21, 2012 indicates the next stage of spiritual development for the world and a much needed new set of values.

“As A.D. 2012 approaches, a hidden knowledge is bursting forth ready to be recognized and integrated into a world dying for a new life.” Maya Cosmogenesis 2012, John Major Jenkins

2012 Mayan Calendar Kukulcan Pyramid Chichen Itza

The Kukulcan Pyramid at Chichen Itza is a huge solar clock or calendar located on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. I was fortunate to be there one year for the Spring Equinox and witness the light display of the great feathered serpent, Kukulcan descending down the stairs of the pyramid and into the ground. I was amazed by the highly advanced Classic Maya.

The early history of the 2012 Mayan calendars

Before we get started, I have to tell you there’s more than one 2012 Mayan Calendar. Four will be covered.

It’s important you know too that much about these 2012 Mayan calendars is up for interpretation. Their actual purpose is vague. The different time periods of these 2012 Mayan calendars appears to represent overlapping natural cycles that culminate on December 21, 2012. One thing is for sure, they were the cornerstones of life during the heyday of the ancient Maya and I feel we will someday soon know their true purpose again.

So how did these calendars come about? Izapa, an ancient spiritual/ceremonial site located near the Guatemala border in Mexico appears to be the birthplace of the 2012 Mayan Calendars. Izapa would have been similar to a Buddhist abbey or monastery. Aspirants from all over came to learn the deepest spiritual secrets of the cosmos and how they related to the earth. This information in itself is quite significant. Here's a society whose entire purpose was to understand the concept of as above...so below.

The The 2012 Mayan calendar the Tzolkin, is the shortest cycle of all the 2012 Mayan calendars, which re-occurs every 260 days. The Mayan used lords not months for its twenty cycle signs. Each possessed distinct individual character traits. These lords remind me of astrology with the planets having different personality characteristics or moods.

The cosmos were of paramount importance to the ancient Maya. Their entire lives revolved around what happened in the night sky. The 2012 Mayan calendars for the most part, are based on the same.

"Izapa was the center of initiation rites into Galactic Cosmology. It was an innovative ceremonial center where initiates were led around the monument groups slowly revealing that the ancient Polar God (the Big Dipper) was false and that there were several cosmic centers." Maya Cosmogensis 2012, John Major Jenkins

According to John Major Jenkins, high-level shamans and calendar priests came to Izapa from far reaches in Mesoamerica to learn from the masters there. Rituals based on one of the 2012 Mayan calendars, the Tzolkin were performed at this site. The people of Izapa are believed by some Mayan scholars to be a transitional culture between the Olmecs and the Maya. Others believe the Maya are a much older culture than thought before.

So what are these 2012 Mayan calendars trying to tell us?

Each tracks a different time periods, but are inter-meshed together into a cohesive package on the stelae or buildings of the Classic Maya. The Tzolkin appears to be more earth centered. The Haab was a solar calendar. The Long Count tracked precession.

The Maya used EARTH, SOLAR and UNIVERSE 2012 Mayan calendars spiraling out from each other, but connected.

Again, this confirms the Mayas as above...so below mentality. It looks as though the 2012 Mayan calendars with their individual purpose functioned together to tell a story from the small picture through to the big picture.

The Calendar Round is actually a combination of the Tzolkin and the Haab synchronized together. It acted independently on it’s own, and defined a cycle of just under fifty-two years or 18,980 days. There were named days but no named years. The Calendar Round was used by a number of Mesoamerican cultures including the Aztecs.

What do we really know about the 2012 Mayan calendars?

Much of the ancient knowledge is lost. The Maya were masters at synchronizing the natural cycles of the earth and the cosmos. At some point around December 21, 2012 a light bulb should go off in our heads. Then we’ll at last understand and appreciate the ingenuity and advanced spiritual development of the ancient Maya.

What we consider 2012 Mayan calendars are much more sophisticated and far reaching. Scholars have tried to fit these works of art into a square hole of what we consider they should be, and found inconsistencies. The Maya were very precise with their calculations, which indicates to me, these "calendars" are not being used in the way intended. After all the Maya calculated this Great Cycle change over 2,000 years ago to the day. Scientist have verified their galactic alignment predictions.

Could it be these 2012 Mayan calendars are an advanced measurement of the earth’s spiritual growth as a whole? Could they show the dates of cycle changes like a diary but with a predictable future? Or, maybe they represent a step-by-step guide to spiritual ascension. There has to be a good reason why the Maya went to so much effort to record an event thousands of years into the future.

The Maya thought of time in circles or cycles

as many other cultures all over the world. They believed our souls came back to the earth in continuous cycles of birth and death on their journey to Self-realization. The ancient Maya were most likely looking out for their own best interest. After all wouldn't their own souls be coming back to continue their personal and planetary spiritual path? I’m sure those souls are here with us right now.

The Maya felt the earth itself was on a spiritual journey. To them we were simply cells within the earth's body. What the earth experienced, we would too. I feel the closer we get to December 21, 2012, the answers will come and we’ll be ready for this great event the Maya felt we should know about.

What do the Mayan calendars say about December 21, 2012?

On this date in the Tzolkin, the lord and number is 4 Ancestors. All new World Ages start with the number four. Ancestors, is a very powerful cycle or lord. In fact it’s the most sacred of all to the Maya. To be at one with the ancestors is to be enlightened.

The Haab shows the December solstice on this day. The Long Count shows our processional alignment with the Sun and Galactic Center. It also shows we will be crossing over to the other side of the Milky Way passing the closest possible to the birthplace of creation, the Galactic Center.

Being at one with the Ancestors was the ultimate state of consciousness. The main goal of the king/shaman was to attain this state of communion with the Ancestors when his spirit psychically traveled under the influence of hallucinogen to the center of the universe. The universal collective consciousness was accessed in this state, opening the door to all ancient knowledge.

How interesting, so many positive indicators appear on the same day in 2012...and, are verified by all of the Mayan calendars.

"In the metaphorical sense, we may well regard this final flower (Ancestors) of the Calendar as a symbol of higher consciousness, for the flower has been used to represent enlightenment by many spiritual traditions, including Tantric Hinduism and both Chinese and Western alchemy. To link one’s individual consciousness with that of the Ancestors, to establish a continuum between personal consciousness and the collective unconscious, may well constitute the ancient Mesoamerican definition of enlightenment." Jaguar Wisdom, Kenneth Johnson

I feel the Tzolkin could gauge not only planetary growth, but also our own personal growth level through our birthday. The lords with their different character traits could indicate our souls growth and possibly challenges in a particular lifetime. The numbers could show if you are just beginning or nearing completion of that challenge or lord characteristic represented by your birth date.

On a larger scale the Tzolkin calculates the Earths journey. What’s in store for us on this historic planetary REBIRTH date of December 21, 2012? If what the Maya say is true it most assuredly won’t be anything like the doomsday tales some are trying to sell. But, somehow I feel it could feel like doomsday for those who refuse to embrace the values of the next Great Age.

Conclusion:

We have spiraled further and faster away from nature since the last Great Cycle.

We are now being called back in these final years before December 21, 2012. We are being asked to revisit our spiritual and natural beginnings. It’s time to get back in touch with the values of love, brotherhood and unity of the next Great Age. It’s appears to be time to move away from unbridled technology, competition and greed the values of the present Great Cycle.

"...the trap of technological development lies in our creating an environment in which all we receive is the limited frequency feedback of our own artificially devised improvements? What if the trap of civilization is a sensory shutdown that gravely impairs our ability to receive fresh information?" The Mayan Factor, Jose Arguelles.

Is it possible we have strayed too far, and a rude awaking is in store for us? Maybe we’ll find out that our technology was built on shaky ground. Could the only way to salvation and survival be to reacquaint with our spiritual side again? The worldwide shift in spiritual consciousness the Maya predict with the coming new age could put our focus back to seeing ourselves as part of the natural cycles of nature and the universe...a spiritual being having a human experience.

This was the way of our ancient ancestors at the beginning of the last great cycle. Our happiness and salvation does not rely on the latest technological feat. But, instead is totally dependent on trusting the spiritual force within.
