The Controversial Long Count Calendar with it's 2012 End Date

By Sandra Musser

The Mayan Long Count calendar prediction for 2012, was not meant to cause doomsday hype. Spiritual rising of the earth is verified by three different Mayan calendars. Scientist agree with the Mayan's cosmic interpretations as predicted. The world is waiting to see if the Maya's prophecy will come true.

Tzolkin and the Haab calendars also confirm the sacredness of December 21, 2012. A more indepth story is in my article

The Mayan Calendar Significance in the Prophecies for December 21, 2012.

How did the Long Count Calendar come about?

This Mesoamerican calendar is a non-repeating base of 20 instead of our 10 point decimal system. It is believed to have come into play between 355 and 37 B.C. at a pilgrimage center called Izapa. The calendar was developed to it’s fullest 200-900 AD by the Classic Maya. The Long Count calendar calibrates precession over vast periods of time. All dates are determined from the start date of August 11, 3114 B.C. long before the Maya existed. This calendar ends December 21, 2012.

Can it be the return of the Messiah?

It’s on this date that the Maya say Quetzalcoatl the Mayan messiah is slated to return to earth. The Christian messiah, Jesus, is also slated to return to earth at some point. Hmmmmm...coincidence? Quetzalcoatl (Feathered Serpent) was not only a deity, but a really person like Jesus, according to ancient carvings in stone. He spiritually enhanced the lives of his people, and the present day Maya are waiting for his return.

"April 5, 1993, was the beginning of the final katun (about 20 year cycle) of the entire Great Cycle. This katun, ending December 21, 2012, is numbered 4...4 Ahau is the katun of the return of the great avatar Feathered Serpent ." Jaguar Wisdom, Kenneth Johnson

The end date of December 21, 2012 is actually just the beginning of the next Great Cycle in an ever-circulating cycle of time. The Long Count calendar also calibrates the countdown to the future union of First Father (our sun) and Cosmic Mother (the galactic center of the Milky Way) on December 21, 2012.

"...a rebirth will also occur for the entire world when it is renewed upon the future union of the December solstice Solar Lord with the Great Mother’s Galactic Heart." Maya Cosmogenesis 2012, John Major Jenkins.

It would have taken hundreds of years of tracking the cosmos to perfect the precession changes. Through astronomical calculations based on precession the Maya had an accurate idea of the rate of change to make their precise predictions for December 21, 2012.

The Maya also calculated to the day Cortez’s arrival and their own demise with this calendar. The processional changes had to be reliable and consistent for the Maya over 2,000 years ago, to predict the historic alignment on December 21, 2012. Science today has verified the ancient Maya’s processional accuracy.

What is the Long Count Calendars purpose?

This Mayan calendar was used to compute large cosmic cycles. Through his studies, John Major Jenkins realized the people of Izapa were aware of precession and a rare alignment that will occur on 13.0.0.0.0, or December 12, 2012.

By tracking precession, the Itazapians and the Maya noticed a change on the horizon materializing slowly. The December solstice sun and the galactic center were moving closer into alignment over time.

The Classic Maya devoted their lives to calibrating and tracking precession. Through the use of hallucinogens to aid them, the Maya traveled far into the past and way into the future to gain insight into the meaning of the cosmos and how it would affect the earth.

Through precise mathematical calculations and calibrations, they determined on the December solstice in 2012 an historic alignment between the earth, the sun and the great bulge or the womb of creation, the Milky Way would occur. The Maya considered this bulge to be the center of the Universe.

What was even more amazing is our galaxy on the exact same day will cross over to the other side of the Milky Way coming the closes it will come to the womb of creation in almost 26,000 years. This cross-over symbolizes the rebirth the Maya predict for the earth.

How does this calendar relate to the prophecies for 2012?

All three Mayan calendars including the Long Count confirm the rebirth of the world at a higher level of consciousness on December 21, 2012.

Since we are a part of the world, humanity will also undergo a spiritual unfolding. It appears the ancient Maya saw the earth as a living organism. Each of us would have been like a cell within her body. The world was believed to periodically renew itself, and it appears we are about to experience just such a renewal on December 21, 2012. The periods of renewal took place at the beginning of all World Ages. According to the Maya we are presently in the fifth world age. It began in 1073 A.D.

"Thus, according to Maya calendric science, the Great Cycle times our collective unfolding as a species, as well as the cycles of culture." Maya Cosmogenesis 2012, John Major Jenkins

There isn’t a Mayan Calendar after 2012 because the calendar is an ever-repeating cycle, which begins again on December 21, 2012. Or, maybe, just maybe the Maya felt we wouldn't need another calendar, because time as we know it would be ending. Even Egyptian/Greek astrology sees the earth in line to become a sacred planet. That would mean we would have to move into alignment with the earth and spiritually ascend with her. We are part of the earth after all.
